Starz has announced the premiere date and the basic premise for season two of Steven Soderberg’s The Girlfriend Experience.
TGE will have two separate arcs in season two – set in Washington DC as 2018 mid-term elections approach, and in New Mexico where a woman who has entered the Witness Protection Program finds herself unable to maintain the low profile required by the WPP and… consequences.
The girlfriend Experience: Season Two will premiere on Sunday, November 5th (9/8C).
Technically a remake of a 1976 movie starring Philip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice) and Irene Cara (Fame), Sparkle is a rehash of tropes we’ve seen before. Unlike the original version and other films that have told the same story (think Dreamgirls as an example), this one manages a few new wrinkles and is lifted by some (forgive me) sparkling performances.
CHAOS [CBS, Fridays, 8/7C] is a spy dramedy that seeks to expand CBS’ number of procedurals and comedies. In that mix, it is, apparently, trying to duplicate the drama/humor mix that makes USA Network the most successful basic cable network. It’s a laudable attempt, but the comedy too often feels forced onto the procedural. When the two don’t overlap – which is seldom – each works just fine. It’s when the two are jammed together that things fall apart and chaos.
