FOX’s Backstrom (Thursdays, 9/8C) could be seen as Dr. Gregory House as a police detective, or he could be seen as Sherlock Holmes as Inspector Lestrade. Whatever the case, Detective Lieutenant Everett Backstrom is the misanthropic head of a team of detectives that tackles the crimes that must be dealt with fast.
In the Swedish novels on which the series is based, Backstrom’s one gift is taking credit for the achievements of his team. Here, however, despite his selfishness and detestation of people in general – and despite fact that his team could probably do the job without him – he is more brilliant than they are so it takes less time to close a case if he works on it (he still tries to do as little work as possible).
Rainn Wilson stars as Det.-Lt. Backstrom and was kind enough to speak about the show – and his character – with a group of journalists/bloggers late last week. He had some interesting things to say – to see how he arrived at the conclusion he made in our headline, follow the jump.
FOX has set the dates for its winter premieres for new scripted shows Backstrom (January 22nd), The Last Man On Earth (March 1st) and Weird Loners (March 31st) – and unscripted World’s Funniest Fails (working title) (January 16th).
Returning scripted shows include Glee’s final 13-episode season (two-hour premiere on January 9th), The following (two-hour premiere on March 2n) and Bones (March 26th). Unscripted returnees include Masterchef Junior (January 6th) and Hell’s Kitchen (March 3rd).

Backstrom, the new series from the creator of FOX’s long-lived Bones, is a procedural that features a despicable, alcoholic, lazy, yet brilliant detective – the Backstrom of the title – played by Rainn Wilson. Yup, he sounds like Gregory House as a cop – but he may be even less functional outside business hours.
Backstrom is coming soon to FOX. Check out the new teaser after the jump.
Batman prequel Gotham, North American Broadchurch adaptation Gracepoint and social experiment/unscripted series Utopia lead the way for Fox’s 2014-15 fall schedule. M. Night Shyamalan’s 10-episode event series, Wayward Pines, Egyptian myth/fantasy series Hieroglyph and Rain Wilson’s politically incorrect but brilliant Backstrom are among the highlights scheduled for 2015. Live specials include Pitbull’s New Year’s Revolution and Grease Live.
Returning shows include perennial favorites Bones, Family Guy and The Simpsons – plus brilliantly unhinged sophomore, Sleepy Hollow. For a complete list of Fox’s 2014-15 lineup, follow the jump to the press release – which includes the full fall schedule and series descriptions and social media info.
Rain Wilson will star as the head of the Serious Crimes Unit in Backstrom, a new one-hour drama from Hart Hanson. The Creator of Bones has been given a thirteen episode order for the series which is based on the acclaimed series of novels by renowned Swedish criminologist Leif G.W. Persson. Wilson will play Detective Everett Backstrom, ‘a delightfully disheveled misanthrope with a twisted, brilliant mind and a heart of barbed wire.’
Production is scheduled to begin soon. For more details check out the press release after the jump.
