IT’S DATE NIGHT WITH THE HELLCATS — Desperate to raise funds to get them to Nationals, the Hellcats plan a date auction.  However, things take a unexpected turn after Savannah’s (Ashley Tisdale) old boyfriend Noah (guest star) shows up and outbids Dan (Matt Barr), Morgan wins a date with a horrified Marti (Aly Michalka) and Vanessa (Sharon Leal) is bid on by a mystery man whom she suspects is Red (Jeff Hephner) trying to win her back.  Vanessa frets over whether to tell Derrick (D.B. Woodside) about the date as the money will cover the trip to Nationals for the Hellcats.  Meanwhile, Lewis (Robbie Jones) continues to keep a secret from the team.  Heather Hemmens also stars.  John Dahl directed the episode written by Jennifer Schuur.

Television: The CW Is Cheering About The Cheerleaders of Hellcats!

CW-Hellcats-Poster1

One of the predictions I made in my advance review of The CW Network’s new Wednesday night series, Hellcats, is that it had the potential to be a hit with the younger female audiences. Judging by the cheering coming out of the CW Network offices over the ratings success, I would say my prediction was right on the money.  Below is some excerpts from the CW Network press release on the ratings success of Hellcats which stars Ashley Tisdale, Gail O’Grady and Aly Michalka.

September 9, 2010 (Burbank, CA) –  THE CW’s HELLCATS Marks First Premiere to Ever Match or Build on TOP MODEL Lead-In  and Scores Largest Non-Top Model Audience in the 9PM Wednesday night Time Period in 3 Years and Best in 2 Years Among Women 18-34. The series premiere of HELLCATS, titled A World Full of Strangers, accomplished something no other UPN or CW show has ever done, matched or built on its TOP MODEL lead-in.  According to preliminary live plus same day Nielsen ratings for Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, the younger-skewing Hellcats ranked first in the hour among total teens and female teens, and ranked second in the hour with females 12-34. Hellcats also built at the half hour by 15% in adults 18-34, 5% in women 18-34, 8% in adults 18-49, 6% in women 18-49, 14% in persons 12-34 and 9% in females 12-34.

Television: Hellcats-CW’s New Cheerleading Drama Brings It On In Generic But Classy Style

CW-Hellcats-Poster1

Hellcats is described by the CW Network as a coming-of-age story about Marti Perkins (Aly Michalka, “The Roommate,” “Bandslam”), a pre-law scholarship student at Lancer University in Memphis, Tennessee. Marti is a hip, edgy townie with working class roots, whose world flips upside down, literally and figuratively, when her scholarship is canceled and her well-meaning but irresponsible mother, Wanda (Gail O’Grady, “NYPD Blue,” “American Dreams”) neglects to inform her.

Broke and out of options, Marti realizes the only way she can stay in school is by resurrecting  her dormant gymnastic skills to win a place on the Hellcats – Lancer’s legendary cheer squad – and the scholarship that comes with it. Along the way she crosses paths with Savannah Monroe (Ashley Tisdale) the upbeat captain of the cheerleading squad.

Based on the book Cheer: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders by journalist Kate Torgovnick, Hellcats is created by Kevin Murphy who also serves as executive producer along with Tom Welling (star of the long running CW hit series Smallville). The series also stars Heather Hemmens, Matt Barr,Robbie Jones and D. B. Woodside.

Hellcats premieres on the CW Network on Wednesday September 8th at 9PM EST. but a few of us reporter types got an advanced screener to take a look at. I was one of them. Before I had received the screener, I had heard about Hellcats and I have to admit it sounded pretty much like every other generic cheerleading dramas/comedies I had seen before. Plus the CW had already spent some time exploring the lives of high school cheerleaders in their long running teen angst series, One Tree Hill. With this in mind I am not afraid to say I was expecting Hellcats to just be more of the same formula. For it to be a yet another cast of ‘pretty people’ twenty something’s playing roles enmeshed in sex soak angst, betrayals and melodrama  interspersed with scenes of fancy dance moves.  After seeing the screener for the pilot episode of Hellcats, titled A World Full of Strangers, I found out I was right about two things: the cast is full of pretty people and the  episode is definitely interspersed with scenes of fancy dance moves. And while this is a fairly generic cheerleading story filled with your requisite cheerleader type storyline characters, Hellcats is not a One Tree Hill clone set on a college campus. I am pleased to say that Hellcats is a really fun, kind of wholesome series that is all about the spirit of competitive cheerleading without all the sappiness or oversexed raunchiness they could have so easily fallen into.

Television: CW Network Goes For the Cheers & The Spy Action – Adds New Series Hell Cats and Nikita to Their Line UP

Wednesday night get pumped-up with the cheerleader drama “Hellcats”.  Then on  Thursday nights, get ready to delve into the new action-packed drama “Nikita.”

On Thursday, May 20th 2010, Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment, The CW Network, unveiled the schedule for the CW’s 2010-2011 season at a presentation for advertisers, affiliates and national media in the Theater at Madison Square Garden, where singer Katy Perry rocked the house to open the show.

“After just four short years as a network, The CW will premiere our strongest schedule ever this fall, with a combination of hit shows and exciting new series giving us all-original programming five nights a week for the first time. We’ve been growing this network one hit at a time and we’re poised for a great 2010-11 season.” Dawn Ostroff told the audience.

“This year ‘The Vampire Diaries’ was a smash out of the box for us, and another freshman show, ‘Life Unexpected,’ also opened strong and began building an intense, loyal following. On the heels of breaking ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘90210’ the last two seasons and the enduring popularity of ‘Smallville,’ ‘Supernatural,’ ‘One Tree Hill’ and ‘America’s Next Top Model,’ we had more strong program development and believe we have the goods once again with ‘Nikita’ and ‘Hellcats,’ two shows that are fun, fast and loud, and will enable us to make noise in the marketplace this fall,” Ostroff said of the two newest additions to the CW Network line up.
