Hello horror movie fans. If you haven’t been paying attention to Comic-Con or been looking for the lastest news from Guillermo del Toro, then this might be news to ya. Miramax Films has teamed up with screenwriters Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins to release a remake of the 1973 film “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark”. It will be directed by Troy Nixey and will star Katie Holmes (Batman Begins), Bailee Madison (Bridge To Terabithia), and Guy Pearce (The Propositon/Memento). The current plot/synopsis is this: “The film tells the story of a young girl sent to live with her father and his girlfriend in a restored mansion who discovers creatures living in the basement.  When the creatures turn nasty, the nightmare begins, and the child is unable to convince the adults of the imminent danger.” For those that attended Comic-Con, on Friday the 23rd, there was a panel for this movie and those lucky individuals (myself included) got to see footage from this movie for the first time. According to IMDB, “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark” will be released on January 21, 2011. There currently isn’t any trailers available or set pictures. So in the meantime, Fandango caught up the director Troy Nixey and IGN caught up with screenwriter/producer Guillermo del Toro to discuss the movie. I will continue to follow this movie. Until I hear more, enjoy the Youtube clips:

A Contract With God, by Will Eisner – one of the earliest and most influential graphic novels – is being adapted as a live action film. Given that, with the creation of his greatest masked hero, The Spirit, Eisner pioneered the use of cinematic techniques in comics, it seems only right and natural that his first graphic novel should find its way to the actual cinematic medium. The only question is this: why did it take so long?

While I was never a fan of the Smurfs, the film, which doesn’t open until August of next year, has put together a terrific cast that includes Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria [as Gargamel, no less], Jayma Mays, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Anton Yelchin and Sofia Vergara – to name but a few. I’m intrigued by that cast.

Here’s a look at how the Smurfs look when they pop up in Times Square.

If you loved the manic energy and subversive style of the Crank movies – and the dark satire of Gamer, for that matter – then you’ll love this: according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, the co-directors of those films, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, are in talks to direct Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Nicholas Cage is in early talks to star in the sequel as well.

Les Grossman

If, like me, you were puzzled by the amount of attention given to Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman during the MTV Movie Awards last weekend, then today’s press release from Paramount, announcing a film about the character [though treating him very much like an actual Hollywood heavyweight] should clear that up. The frequently hilarious press release follows the jump.
