I’m not sure why it is, but Americans seem to have a fascination with the British Royal Family. Perhaps that’s way BBC Home entertainment is releasing a special box set, The Royal Collection. Composed of four documentaries – The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (a behind-the-scenes look at the Queen’s 1953 Coronation), King George and Queen Mary: The Royals Who Rescued the Monarchy (a two-part portrait of Elizabeth II’s grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary), Queen Victoria’s Children (a three-part series exploring the reign of Victoria through her personal relationships with her husband and her nine children) and How To Be a Prince (a program centered on Prince William from 2003) – and a replica of a booklet for Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation, featuring original photography from the ceremony, The Royal Collection will be released on May 21st.

House of Cards, Netflix’s first in-house drama series, is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and UltraViolet on June 11th. The complete first season will be released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
The acclaimed political series (with a MetaCritic.com score of 76/100) – which stars Kevin Spacey as powerful but slighted Democratic House Majority Whip Frank Underwood and Robin Wright as his wife/partner in political revenge – is based an equally well-received series of British miniseries that starred Sir Ian Richardson.

One of the biggest and most controversial movies of the year is Zero Dark Thirty from Director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker). The movie’s production caused quite a stir from the conservative media (what doesn’t get their panties in a bunch?) when it was revealed that the CIA was providing Bigelow’s team unprecedented access to information regarding the killing of American enemy number one Osama Bin Laden.

It used to be that when a movie became a trilogy (especially a planned one) it meant something. It was a very rare thing. How many years was it between Star Wars and Back to the Future to The Star Wars Prequels? Thanks to the success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it seems like a lot of movies are now being split in two for no storytelling reason. Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2? Harry Potter? Ok, I’ll give you splitting Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, on paper, was a good idea, it was an 800 page book, but in execution? One 3-Hour movie probably would have been better. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn? Oh, hell nah….Now we have the absolute worst example of this new trend – Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.

Les Misérables is one of the most popular and longest running musicals of all time. Just in the DC area alone it has grossed over $53 million dollars in its numerous runs. On Broadway it has earned over $800 million dollars. Based on the Victor Hugo classic (At 1,400 pages it is one of the longest books ever written) it is a universal, moving and emotional story about redemption against all odds. It has one more medium to try and conquer – Blu-ray/DVD.
