BLU-RAY REVIEW: Michelle says Maybe to Yes Man!

Yes Man Blu-ray

Yes, yes, yes! I missed Yes Man when it came out in the theaters, wanted to see it but never got around to it. It came out on the old Blu-ray a few weeks ago and I finally got a chance to watch it this weekend. Jim Carrey is great in this as the guy who always says no to everything until he meets Terrence Bundley a motivational speaker who is pushing the concept that you have to say "Yes" to everything in order to get something in return. It’s basically a karma thing and of course in the beginning Carl Allen is leery until a series of strange events leads him to a chance encounter with Allison (Zooey Deschanel) who turns out to be his dream girl. Why don’t we see more of Zooey? She’s awesome, unique, plays real down to earth quirky characters. The sad thing is, I live my life like Carl Allen did before he discovered the power Yes. I stay home all the time, make excuses not to go out and seeing a film like this makes me think, "hey, maybe I should start saying "Yes" more." Yes Man isn’t a laugh out loud movie, but it does make you feel good.

It’s Blu-ray so the picture quality is excellent, but it’s not eye-popping or a "showcase" title. It would probably look just as good on a standard or up-scalled DVD. It’s a full 1080P transfer. But there’s nothing in the cinematography that makes you go "Wow, this is amazing!" The navigation follows the standard Warner Brother’s template – which frankly, I don’t like. It’s a regular menu bar when you click the special features button you get this big screen of blocky, crunched up text. And normally on WB menus the text colors also make it hard to read. It’s a little cleaner here.

Audio tracks include English 5.1, English Dolby True-HD, French, Spanish, and Portugues with subtitles in each language.

Special Features

  • Downtime on the Set (9 Min, HD)
Jim Carrey joking around with the cast and crew.
  • Jim Carrey Extreme Yes Man (12 Mins, HD) – About all the stunts that Jim Carrey performed
  • On the Set with Danny Wallace The Original Yes Man (9 mins, HD) – Jim interviews the original author of "Yes Man."
  • Music Videos by the band Munchausen by Proxy – Zooey’s fake band from the movie performs in several music videos. And there’s a fake 5 minute Behind the Music style documentary, cute.
  • Deleted Scenes (7 Mins)
  • Gag Reel
  • Warner Brothers BD-Live

This is a pretty nice Blu-ray package but I wouldn’t recommend paying the premium Blu-Ray price for it, if you can pick it up for $19 then it’s a good buy, otherwise just get the DVD version, I don’t think the Blu-ray version adds much value to the overall enjoyment. You can get the 2 Disc version that includes Digital Copy on Amazon for $24. But be warned, Warner Brothers is playing silly games and only making some of their disks Windows only. They did that with Speed Racer (I paid my own money specifically for the Digital Copy version) which totally ticked me off when I discovered it wouldn’t work with my Mac. So because of that I boycott all WB digital copy disks. So word of advice, stay away from WB DC, unless they start specifically stating which disks are Windows only.  At the very least, how about a little truth in labeling and being up front about compatibility? Until Warner’s changes their policy I’m going to give every one of their Blu-ray’s an F on the Features score.

So with that in mind here are the grades.

  • Movie Grade – A-
  • Menu – C
  • Picture – B
  • Audio – B
  • Features Grade – F

Final Overall Grade B
