“Infamous” is a campy biopic on Truman Capote. Local celebrity Sandra Bullock dons a fright(ful) wig and tries to act southern. Toward the end, things become gruesome. A very mixed arthouse bag.

“Man of the Year” is a film that starts off well but soon goes off-track and downhill. It’s almost as if they started making the movie and then decided it should have been a different kind of movie – or – they made two short films and decided to combine them. The political satire half is terrific, but the conspiracy/thriller half is ludicrous. A misfire!

“Catch a Fire” is a biopic set in Africa and tells about the life of a man whose life during the 80′s was dramatically changed because he lied about what he was doing on a certain day. Good performances, violence.

“The Fountain” is one weird movie. It tries to be many things and ultimately fails. Part costume drama, part sci-fi/fantasy, part special effects extravaganza, and part soap opera. Parts of this will easily put you to sleep! The female lead has very little to do, but is absolutely lovely in one of her roles (queen). For the arthouse crowd.

“Flags of our Fathers” recounts the lives of three men who were involved in the flag raising(s) at Iwo Jima during World War 2. One marine is in love with himself; another is an alcoholic; the sailor comes off as basically a saint. The war scenes are brutal and shot in ‘almost’ black-and-white. This 132 minute film is jolting at times and makes the important point that the word ‘hero’ should never be used carelessly.

“Winter Passing” has as its central character a struggling young NYC actress from Michigan. And you’ll be struggling as well to stay awake during this dreary, meaningless mess. You won’t be alone if you get the impression that this has a script on napkins and that the ‘watchword’ was improvise. Unlike the typical artsy-fartsy fare, this one comes with a Hollywood ending. Basically a showcase for Zooey Deschanel.

“Annapolis” is a cornball ‘An officer and a gentleman’ meets ‘Rocky’ with James Franco trying to channel Gary Cooper. This should be on cable before you know it.
