Jeanie’s bottle.  We all wanted one at some point in time.  All the girls wanted to be that pretty genie with the magical powers, and all the boys dreamed of having a hot genie like Barbara Eden to command.  For those growing up with  I Dream of Jeanie,  or who watched the syndicated show many years later, the bottle represents irreplaceable memories of another era.  And if you’re lucky enough, you might actually be able to own it now. The bottle that made Barbara Eden famous lives in her home office and will be up for auction, provided Joe Maddalena — the world’s leading authority on entertainment memorabilia — is able to convince its owner to part with it.

There are many more unique items from Hollywood history including the Jupiter II Space Pod from  Lost in Space;  the biplane miniature from the original  King Kong;  Teal’C Jaffa costume from  Stargate SG-1;  the magic carpet bag held by Mary Poppins; and the Wicked Witch’s hat from the  Wizard of Oz.  In the end, you will not believe some of the final winning bids!  It appears that memorabilia collecting is serious business. Yet despite some of those jaw-dropping numbers, the stories that go along with these distinctive items are even more fascinating.

For a fascinating look at the world of Hollywood memorabilia, be sure to tune in to Syfy’s new reality series, “Hollywood Treasure,” featuring Joe Maddalena, which will premiere Wednesday, October 27 with two back-to-back half-hour episodes at 10:00pm and 10:30pm.  A review of the first two episodes follows the cut.

Remember the final shot of Raiders of the Lost Ark, when the crated up Ark of the Covenant is placed on a pile of boxes and the camera pulls back and keeps pulling back to reveal a warehouse the size of Rhode Island? Well, Warehouse 13 [Syfy, Tuesdays,9/8C] could very possibly be that warehouse.

Pete & Myka 2

When two Secret Service Agents – Pete Lattimer [Eddie McClintock] and Myka Bering [Joanne Kelly] prevent a supernaturally influenced assassin from killing the President of the United States, they find themselves assigned to a very secret installation by the mysterious, and very determined Mrs. Frederic [CCH Pounder] – Warehouse 13 .

The Sci Fi Channel today announced the casting of the leads for its four-hour movie event that is scheduled for a December, 2009, premiere. This updating of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland will star Kathy Bates [Charlotte’s Web, Revolutionary road] as the Queen of Hearts and Caterina Scorsone [1-800-Missing, the upcoming Edge of Darkness - pictured] as Alice.

Scorsone

In this take on Carroll’s classic, Alice is a fiercely independent twenty-something who finds herself on the wrong side of a mirror. As the press release pits it, “She is a stranger in an outlandish city of twisted towers and casinos built out of playing cards, all under the rule of a deliciously devilish Queen who’s not very happy about Alice’s arrival.”

Rounding out the cast of the mini-series, which has just begun shooting in Vancouver, B.C., are: Tim Curry [Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Colour of Magic] as Dodo, Colm Meany [The Commitments, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine] as the King of Hearts, Matt Frewer [Watchmen, Eureka] as the White Knight, Philip Winchester [Crusoe] as Jack of Hearts, Andrew Lee Potts [Primeval] as Hatter, Alessandro Juliani [Battlestar Galactica], as 9 of Clubs, Timothy Webber [Men in Trees, Taken] as Carpenter, Alex Diakun [Sanctuary, The X-Files: I Want to Believe], Zak Santiago [Driven to Kill, Young Blades], and Eugene Lipinski [Animorphs, Intelligence] as Doctors Dee and Dum.

The writer/director is Nick Willing, director of Sci Fi’s Emmy-winning Tin Man. Executive Producers for Alice are: Matthew O’Connor and Lisa Richardson from Reunion Pictures, Jamie Brown from Studio Eight and RHI Entertainment’s Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr.

In the series – which focuses on two FBI agents who are assigned to a massive storage facility for “strange artifacts, mysterious relics and supernatural souvenirs” – Scagliotti will play Claudia Donovan, a young, hip, brilliant techno-whiz who cracks the facility’s security in search of Rubinek’s character, Artie. Her natural aptitude for science and technology enable her to figure out and manipulate many of the facility’s pieces in order to help the team.

Artie is the caretaker of the Warehouse, while Pete [McClintock] and Myka [Kelly] are the FBI agents who are charged with finding and securing new objects to cache there.

Warehouse 13 premieres with a two-hour episode on July 7th, 2009, at 9/8 Central.

The fine folks at the SyFy Network (I really can’t type that without laughing because I keep thinking Sifee) are trumpeting the ratings numbers for the series finale.

Battlestar Galactica’s epic series finale, airing from 9-11pm on Friday, March 20, added to its phenomenal ratings with the inclusion of Live + 7 DVR data. Overall, the episode averaged a 2.2 Household rating, 3.1 million total viewers, 2.1 millon Adults 25-54 and 2 million Adults 18-49. This was the best performance for Battlestar Galactica in total viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 since the February 4, 2005 episode. In addition, among all SCI FI original series telecasts in the network’s 16 year history, this is the #5 most-watched original series performance in Adults 25-54 and the best performance for any original series on this measure since 2005, and is the #4 most-watched telecast in Adults 18-49. A limited-edition, uncut version of the highly-anticipated pilot of Caprica, the new drama series from the producers of Battlestar Galactica, will premiere on DVD from Universal Home Entertainment on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.

I’m not sure what SyFy (Lol) gains from releasing the DVD before Caprica airs on the channel. Ah, I guess this is truly it, the final Battlestar Galactica Post and it’s about the ratings. I can’t imagine there’s much more news about the show other than Caprica – which I’m counting as a totally different thing. But then again, I am scheduled to speak with David Eick sometime in the next few days. Anyhoo

There have been a lot of responses to the rebranding of the SCI FI Channel to Syfy, which takes effect on July 7, 2009. Most of those responses [as is usual on the good ole Interweb] have been negative – and there’s been a question of whether SCI FI appropriated the name from a popular website that had existed for ten years before a sudden name change. SCI FI honcho, Dave Howe said of that situation, “Once we settled on Syfy it became apparent to us that, you know, the Syfy Portal existed.” Of course, he said a lot more than as he attempted to give us a better understanding of the process of rebranding and its ramifications for the channel’s future.

(Fearless leader note – Do I deliver or what? I told you last week I’d try and get Dave to spill his guts about this stupid name change, unfortunately I was in the middle of moving to Florida so couldn’t sit in. But our fellow Sci-Fi Digital Press folks put his Dave’s feet to the fire. Great job Ken! Participants in this teleconference call included: Ken Gold [Media Boulevard], Meredith Woerner [i09.com], and Kelly West [cinemablend.com]. [click to continue…]
