TELEVISION: American Idol Recap (03.31.10)

Time for another IDOL results show where one contestant will be going home tonight.  Last night I predicted that Katie Stevens (pictured) would be going, not because she had a bad performance, but because I don’t think she has a following and she was in the bottom three last week.  So was Tim Urban, but I think Tim’s female fans are keeping him in the game.  I could be wrong.  We’ll see.  Meanwhile, Usher was the mentor last night and did a fantastic job of giving solid advice to the contestants.  He performs tonight and I believe he is the only performer which means we must endure another bad group performance.  In any case, as always, if you live on the West Coast, SPOILER ALERT, full recap after the jump…

The show opens with a montage of “Clash of the Titans” meshed with the IDOL recap from last night.  OH, PLEASE!  What a crappy marketing tie-in.  It’s truly laughable and as bad as the weekly group performances.

We are spared the group performance tonight.  Amen!  Instead, former IDOL winner Ruben Studdard performs his new song, “Don’t Make ‘Em Like U No More.”  I have forgotten how smooth Ruben’s voice is.  He’s really good.  He’s been on the gospel circuit the last few years, but he needs to get back to his R&B roots.  Ruben has lost a ton of weight and admits he is now a Vegan and has been hitting the gym.  He also says he and Clay Aiken are going on tour together this summer.

A quick break and then another Ford music video to “Kung Fu Fighting.”  It did look cool though.  Now, Ryan starts a time killing Q&A with the contestants.

Lee DeWyze — Lee had his best performance ever.  There is no way he is going home.  He said it was his most relaxed performance.  Ryan stretches it out, but tells him he is safe.

Casey James — Is also safe.  No surprise.

Aaron Kelly — Not his best performance last night, but he definitely has a fan following.  Ryan keeps killing time and asks Simon to give Aaron advice on how to sing a love song when you have never been in love.  Simon says, “Ryan, this is not the Oprah Winfrey show, let’s get on with it.”  LOL…Yay, Simon.   After all of that, Aaron is safe.

Shiobhan Magnus and Katie Stevens — Shiobhan had an off night, but she rocks.  Katie was a little “robotic” in her performance.  I still think she lands in the bottom three.  Ryan again goes back to judges for more Q&A.  Ugh… He then reveals that Katie is in the bottom three and Shiobhan is safe.

Usher takes the stage after the break.  After the break, Ryan reveals that next week’s theme is the Lennon/McCartney song book.  This could be a tough one for the IDOLS.

Usher then performs “OMG” from his new album.  He is definitely singing live b/c it sounds bad and singers these days can’t sing.  Ugh!  Usher has a great voice, but you would never know it by this performance.  Will.i.am is a special guest in the performance.  I always thought he sounded horrible, but then again, I am not a Black Eyed Peas fan.  OMG!  I’m glad it’s over.

More results…

DiDi Benami — DiDi has a rough night last night.  I would not be surprised if she was in the bottom three.  And I’m right.  She joins Katie.

Michael Lynch — He is definitely safe.  Everybody loves Big Mike.  Ryan says, “This is surprising.  Mike will you walk over here, please.”  And then Ryan reveals he is safe.  The audience erupts and Big Mike lifts little Ryan and slams him back down.  LOL

Crystal Bowersox — Very quickly he tells her that she is safe.

Tim Urban and Andrew Garcia — Tim will be in the bottom three.  I think Andrew is safe.  Ryan reveals that Andrew is safe and Tim is in the bottom three.

Our bottom three is Katie Stevens, DiDi Benami, and Tim Urban.  The person who goes back to safety is…Katie.  Damn, I missed another one.  So either DiDi or Tim is going home.  I hope it’s Tim, but I think it’s DiDi.

Diddy who now goes by the group name Diddy Dirty Money for some reason sings his new song “Hello, Good Morning.”  He is so lip syncing this song.  He was very humble though thanking the audience and the Idol Crew for making him feel comfortable b/c he said he was nervous.

A quick break and now it’s time to find out who is up for elimination.  DiDi or Tim???

After the usual stalling, Ryan reveals that DiDi Benami is in danger of going home and Tim is safe once again.  She sings “Rhiannon,” one of her better performances for the judges, but I don’t think they will save her.  Simon says, “It’s bad news DiDi.  We are not going to save you, but I have got to tell you that it was a million times better than last night.”  So DiDi Benami is gone.

Next week, it’s the song book of Lennon/McCartney.  Until then…
