The 33 – 33 Trapped Miners; 69 Days!

33-BA-05322Cr

In 2010, a mine in Chile collapsed trapping thirty-three men under 700 tons of rock – deeper underground than the length of two Empire State Buildings. After 69 days, they were freed.

The 33 is the story of the miners; their loved ones who erected a temporary town on the site, and the men who worked to save them. Considering that it’s telling three interconnected stories, it’s a miracle that it got made at all – let alone this well.

Pan Picks Up Steam As It Goes!

IMG_1046.DNG

Pan may be the origin story nobody wanted but it is certainly not the disaster I was expecting.

The idea that Peter Pan had to have come from somewhere is one that, I admit, I had never pondered, but Pan tells that story in a way that has much to offer for both kids and adults – though it doesn’t really achieve maximum impact until about two-thirds in.

The Intern: On the Importance of Handkerchiefs!

THE INTERN

The Intern is that buddy movie where the buddies are a man and a woman. It’s also a paean to being contemporary without sacrificing the best what the past has given us – and about the idea that a woman can or at least should be able to have it all. It’s also about grey power.

That all these themes are wrapped up in a slight little dramedy is something of a small miracle.

Black Mass Showcases Dazzling Performance By Johnny Depp!

WBL207_003.tif

The story of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger is one that, if it weren’t true, would be thought too ridiculous to film. The kingpin of Boston crime was actually an FBI informant when the FBI was trying to take down the Boston Mafia – by playing the FBI he helped take them down while being given the freedom to build his own criminal empire.

Johnny Depp once again disappears into a role as he brings Bulger to life.

Max Is Great; His Movie… Not So Much!

Max & Kyle

Max is the tale of a dog who suffers PTSD following the death of his human partner in Afghanistan. When he is unable to work with anyone else, he is scheduled to be put down – until he shows an unexpected connection to his late partner’s little brother.

This boy and his dog flick suffers from general ham-fistedness, though the dogs who play Max are astonishing (eat your heart out, Rin Tin Tin!).

Yes, movie star Vinnie Chase and his entourage – older brother Johnny Drama, best friend/manager E (for Eric), and driver/mascot Turtle – are back in all their bromantic glory. The only difference being that this time they’re on the big screen. Well, that and they’re in better form than they’ve been since probably season three.

UTC_5-19-14_01583.CR2

Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon plays the wife of a would-be snitch and the buttoned-down cop sent to escort her to trial. When two different pairs of assassins kill the husband, the two women go on the run.

Despite terrific chemistry between Vergara and Witherspoon (whose production company developed the film), Hot Pursuit only hits on about one gag out of every eight and runs some of its most unfunny jokes into the ground. Continue reading Hot Pursuit: Not Quite a Female Midnight Run!
