Oz The Great and Powerful – Pay No Attention To The Hole In The Middle!

Pay no attention to the hole in the middle of Oz the Great and Powerful. While much of the film is admirable, James Franco is too hip, too modern and too in on the joke. While the rest of the cast are playing their (mostly thinly developed characters), Franco is winking at the audience and that’s just annoying most of the time.

On the other hand, the film is a magnificent tapestry of visuals and some of the characters work beautifully (Joey King’s China Doll provides the heart; Zach Braff’s Finley provides the real comic relief, and Rachel Weisz’s evil Evanora provides the gusto).

J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

As has been trumpeted over the last few days, Disney has confirmed J.J. Abrams as the director of the next episode in the Star Wars saga. The official press release arrived this morning. Let’s hope he can for Star Wars what he did for Star Trek…

Ho-Hum! Beauty And The Beast 3D Is Just Another Brilliant Disney Classic!

We all know the story – the beautiful Belle sacrificing her freedom to save her father; the arrogant princeling whose ill treatment of a poor old woman leads to being cursed to become a beast until he finds someone who can love him despite his ferocious appearance. The question is whether it’s worth seeing the film in 3D.

Short answer: Yes!

The Secret World of Arrietty: Beloved Classic – The Borrowers – Gets Animated!

On February 17, 2012, Walt Disney Studios will present The Secret World of Arrietty – Studio Ghibli’s adaptation of Mary Norton’s classic novel, The Borrowers. Co-written by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi [a key animator on Miyazaki’s brilliant Ponyo], the English voice cast of The Secret World of Arrietty features Bridgit Mendler [Wizards of Waverly Place], Amy Poehler [Parks & Recreation], Carol Burnett [The Carol Burnett show, Horton Hears a Who], Will Arnett [Up all Night, Arrested Development], David Henrie [How I Met Your Mother], Moises Arias [Astro Boy].
