The CW Network made an early announcement of the renewal of five of their top series. Returning for the 2011 Fall television season on the CW will be The Vampire Diaries, 90210, Gossip Girl, America’s Next Top Model and the Friday night action series Supernatural.

11season5

In moving to Fridays last September, Supernatural, which stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, immediately helped make The CW more competitive on the night and dramatically contributed to year-to-year gains on Friday of 66% in adults 18-34 and 60% in viewers.  Supernatural, which is currently in it’s sixth season, also made it onto not one, but two TV Guide Fan Favorite covers this season. The series, about two monster hunting, demon fighting brothers, continues to gain popularity, new fans and viewers.

So let’s see if I get this straight. This Friday at 9 PM EST on the CW Network, Supernatural lead actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles play Sam and Dean Winchester who end up in an an alternate reality on a  TV show where they must pretend to be actors named Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. There is no angel Castiel around, only an actor named Misha Collins!

Confused yet? Wait, it gets better.

Sam finds out that this Jared Padalecki guy is married to Ruby (2.0)…err we mean the beautiful actress Genevieve Cortese who played Ruby (2.0). Well that’s got to be awkward for Sam, who has to make nice and might have to hide the demon killing knife from Dean. No appearances that we know of by the gorgeous Danneel Harris, AKA Mrs. Jensen Ackles, but we’re sure Dean will no doubt appreciate that this Ackles guy knows how to hook up with a really hot chick too!

How does all of this come about? Read on after the jump to see the details and more photos from S6.15, The French Mistake which airs on the CW Network this Friday night (2.25.11) at 9 PM EST. All photos are copyright to Jack Rowand / The CW and used with permission.

After an extra week delay in coming back from hiatus, The CW Network is set to air brand new episodes of their hit actions series’ Smallville and Supernatural. So it’s official, The boys of action and adventure (and some girls too) are back!

“SMALLVILLE” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET)
“Collateral” (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)

CHLOE SULLIVAN RETURNS TO SMALLVILLE — Clark (Tom Welling), Oliver (Justin Hartley), Lois (Erica Durance) and Dinah (guest star Alaina Huffman) are
released by the VRA after being captured at Hawkman’s funeral but each of them have flashbacks of Chloe (Allison Mack) holding them against their will. When Chloe returns,
Dinah warns the others that Chloe may now be a traitor. Oliver dismisses her concerns but Clark is unsure if he can trust Chloe after she disappeared without an explanation.
Cassidy Freeman also stars. Morgan Beggs directed the episode written by Jordan Hawley.

“SUPERNATURAL” — (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET)
“Like A Virgin” (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)

DEATH HAS PUT SAM’S SOUL BACK, BUT IS IT STILL SAM? — Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Bobby (Jim Beaver) anxiously wait for Sam (Jared Padalecki) to wake up to see if Death
(Julian Richings) was able to restore his soul without causing Sam to lose his mind. Meanwhile, Dean and Bobby investigate a disappearance of virgins and discover dragons are behind the kidnappings. Bobby sends Dean to a doctor who owns the only weapon in the world that can slay a dragon, but Dean must prove himself worthy enough to take it. Phil Sgriccia directed the episode written by Adam Glass.

Having seen an advanced preview of Supernatural S6.12 Like a Virgin, I am even more impressed season 6  of Supernatural which, as a viewer, I feel has been the best since season 2. That’s not to say that other seasons didn’t have their exceptional moments, but season 6 of Supernatural is more than just exceptional moments.  The season so far has had many exceptional episodes in my opinion and S6.12, Like a Virgin, is yet another one.  Like a Virgin is an interesting and multi-layered title for a very multi-layered episode of Supernatural that, I believe, is going to become a fan favorite. I can’t give away too many details, but I can say that Supernatural fans are in for a ride that  is both satisfying and culminates in meeting up with a new ‘big bad’ that may well make Lucifer look like a choirboy!

Actor Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean Winchester on the hit CW Network action series Supernatural, is a Pisces. Pisces is a zodiac sign that is symbolized by two fish swimming side by side, but in opposite directions, which signify that, Pisces people can have duel natures such as having both a pragmatic and a dreamer side to them.

I don’t know if that describes Jensen Ackles personally, but I do know that he has had some interesting opportunities to delve into duality in his years on Supernatural. It started in season 3 when he got his first opportunity to work with himself as an actor in a short, but pivotal scene in S3.10, Dream A Little Dream of Me. Then in S5.4 The End, Ackles spent the majority of the episode working opposite himself as an actor when he played both the present day and future incarnations of Dean Winchester. In tonight’s brand new episode of Supernatural season 6 Weekend At Bobby’s, Jensen Ackles gets to take on the newest duality in his career: being behind the camera as his director self directing his actor self who will be in front of the camera.

Jensen Ackles has stated in past interviews that he is fascinated by working with cameras.  He has expressed that he has a love for photography, a hobby he is adept enough at that he impressed a group of Japanese photographers doing a photo shoot with him in Japan in 2007. The actor worked with them both in front and behind the cameras to set up some very artistic and unique photographs to accompany a magazine interview with him.  During rounds of interviews he did for his lead role as Tom Hanniger in the 2009 horror movie, My Bloody Valentine: 3D, Ackles stated that one of the main reasons for wanting to work on the movie was so that he could have a chance to work with and see the new ‘Real D’  3D camera technology in action. Given all of this, it’s certainly no surprise that eventually Jensen Ackles would be taking his love of working with cameras and exploring their technology into a brand new direction as he steps behind the ones he’s been in front of for six years on Supernatural to take on directorial duties.

I know the Djinn in Supernatural S6.01 Exile on Main Street (written by Sera Gamble) are suppose to be the bad guys, but I wonder if they would grant this viewer a wish anyway; to send Grandpa Samuel Campbell (Mitch Pileggi) and the Campbell cousins into exile and off of Supernatural as quickly as possible (and why is Mark Campbell now a cousin when back in season one he was Mary’s brother?). I’m going to be right upfront and honest. I never thought any group of new characters introduced to Supernatural would be so immediately annoying to me as a viewer more than the Ghostfacers were. I was wrong. Gramps and the Campbell cousins have the Ghostfacers beat, hands down. Unfortunately, I’m sure that we have a lot more to see of the Campbell clan in episodes to come. Supernatural has been filming since late July and there is no magic wand or handy good Djinn to make the Campbell crew disappear from those episodes. So the best I, as a viewer can hope for is that the storyline involving them gets good enough to make me change my mind about wanting the Campbell’s to go away.

That said, and my immediate adverse reactions to them aside, there are some interesting questions surrounding the decision to bring these characters into Supernatural for season six. As I was watching this part of the story unfold in S6.01 Exile on Main Street, it left me wondering if this wasn’t somehow a loop back to the pre-writer’s strike part of Supernatural season three. Back before the season got shortened and Supernatural, like all the other scripted series affected by the writer’s strike, had to ‘cut to the chase’. Was this the direction they were headed in when Ruby( played in this instance by Katie Cassidy) had Sam investigating Mary Winchester’s background? I’m wondering what meeting the Campbell cousins back then would have brought forth in season three since we know that Sam was originally suppose to have saved Dean from going to hell. It seems pretty clear from S6.01 Exile on Main Street, that Grandpa and the cousins know more secrets about hunting than John Winchester did and are going to play a pivotal role in Sam Winchester’s new storyline and direction.

NIKITA

Nikit continues to heat up the Thursday night ratings for the CW Network and win rave reviews from critics and viewers alike, and with good reason. Nikita is action packed and intelligently written. The main character, played with ultimate cool by Maggie Q is a strong and resourceful woman who can hold her own.

In S1.04 Rough Trade, Nikita revisits a past assignment where she posed as a nanny for an influential government official and decides to right the wrong of his death.  During the mission, Michael (Shane West) comes to Nikita’s rescue and begins to doubt Percy’s (Xander Berkeley) motives.  Back at Division, while undergoing basic training, Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca) suffers from a panic attack which prompts Amanda (Melinda Clarke) to break her of claustrophobia.  Aaron Stanford, Tiffany Hines and Ashton Holmes also star.  Nick Copus directed the episode written by Carlos Coto .

Check out the sneak peek provided by the CW Network and then tune in tonight at 9 PM EST to catch the newest episode of the CW Network’s newest hit series, Nikita.
