Last summer’s biggest hit drama, Under the Dome (CBS, Mondays, 10/9C) returns with an episode called Heads Will Roll – written by Stephen King. It does get around to where the first season cliffhanger left off, but not immediately – if there’s one thing this show does, it’s tease and tantalize.

Under the Dome (CBS, Mondays, 10/9C) is based on the bestselling novel by Stephen King and is as odd, creepy and unnerving as you might expect from that pedigree. The premise of a town cut off from the rest of the world by a giant, invisible dome might not seem that bad, at first, but as the premiere progresses – and unlikely connections are made – it rapidly becomes something potentially terrifying.

Stephen King’s Under the Dome is a potentially ongoing series that begins its initial thirteen-episode run in June on CBS.
With all the new primetime television series premiering right now, it might be easy to miss this evening’s A Night at the Movies: The Horrors of Stephen King [TCM, 8/7C]. The one-hour special is, essentially, King talking about how he came to love horror movies, and why – accompanied by stills and clips from dozens of genre movies [including his own].
Much has been said already, about Syfy’s new series, Haven [Fridays, 10/9C], which premieres this evening. It’s based, loosely, on a short novel by Stephen King – The Colorado King – that featured an unsolved mystery in a town filled with very unusual people.
Into this small town comes FBI Agent Audrey Parker [Emily Rose], who has been assigned to find a local escaped convict. The convict, naturally, has died in what would normally look like an accident if it weren’t for a couple of annoyingly frustrating details. On her way into town, Parker is almost killed when the road in front of here crumbles away, but is saved by Nathan Wuornos [Lucas Bryant], a local detective – a favor that will be returned by the end of the first act.

Syfy’s new series, Haven may have sprung from the mind of Stephen King, but its premiere episode [due to run at 9/8C, July 9, 2010] is being shepherded to the small screen by Adam Kane [The Mentalist, Heroes, Pushing Daisies]. Details from the press release follow the jump.
The Dead Zone has been one of the most consistently intelligently written fantasy/science fiction series on television during its run. The story of John Smith [Anthony Michael Hall], who came out of a six-year coma with heightened psychic abilities, has mixed mythology eps dealing with Smith’s efforts to prevent Armageddon with standalone eps that dealt with his using his ability to save lives, reunite loved ones and other smaller arcs that were treated as no less important.
The final season of the series was moved to Montreal, bringing in a wealth of new guest-stars [like ReGenesis’ Maxim Roy and Brothers’ & Sisters’ Tom Skerritt – along with returnees like Jennifer Finnegan, as Smith’s equally psychic friend, Alex Sinclair. Two deaths in the premiere set in motion arcs that find Smith and Sarah Bannerman [Nicole De Boer] and now Vice-President Greg Stilson [Sean Patrick Flanery] in oddly affecting relationships, while J.J. [now portrayed by Connor Price] deals with tragedy, discovers girls and learns that the VP cheats at cards. Finally, everything comes to a truly unexpected head in the finale, Denouement.
Overall, the final season of The Dead Zone is a delight. It echoes the show’s first season in many ways – including a second coma for Smith! The writing is consistently above average and there are yet new ways shown for Smith to have visions – some quite staggering in their intensity and length. I didn’t find any of the eps to be below average, which is unusual, and many were excellent – especially the premiere, Heritage, and the finale, Denouement. While the entire cast is excellent, Connor Price deserves kudos for coming into the series for its last season and seeming like he’d always been there.
