Immortals is a big, sprawling movie about ancient wars – the war between the Greek gods and the Titans; the attempt by King Hyperion to conquer Greece, and a second war between gods and titans. It’s an orgy of awesome, bloody action perpetrated by awesome, bloody-minded men.

Anonymous –Historical Flummery as Fun Political Thriller!

938495 -Anonymous

Roland Emmerich – he of Independence Day, 10,000 B.C. and 2012 [to name but a few] – takes one of the many theories on who really wrote the works of Shakespeare and turns it into a political thriller that blames all manner of events on… writers?

Cowboys & Aliens is Exactly What It Says on the Tin – Nothing More; Nothing Less!

Movies don’t get more high concept than Cowboys & Aliens. Like Snakes on a Plane, Jon Favreau’s new film delivers precisely what it promises. Therein lies the problem.

Bridesmaids – Two Crap Trailers; One Pretty Darned Funny Movie!

I think I laughed maybe twice over the course of the two trailers for Bridesmaids. Despite this, I decided that I would check out the film for a couple of reasons – the producing directing team of Judd Apatow and Paul Feig, and the combination of Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy. It didn’t hurt that Wiig also co-wrote the film. The result is about 75% hilarious and 50% cringeworthy [there’s a 25% overlap…].

Limitless Is Limited But Effective!

M 28 Bradley Cooper stars in Relativity Media's LIMITLESS.

The central conceit of Limitless is this: what would happen if there was a drug that could literally allow a person to use 100% of their brain? According to current scientific belief, we only use 10-20%, maximum.

Eddie Morra [Bradley Cooper] is a struggling writer. He hasn’t written a word of his novel, but he’s spent his entire advance and is, essentially, living on the avails of his girlfriend, Lindy [Abbie Cornish] – who has had enough. Now, bereft of income and girlfriend, he runs into his ex-brother-in-law, Vernon [Johnny Wentworth], a disreputable sort who has graduated from selling drugs – as we know them – to something called NZT. NZT enables its user to fully utilize their brain. There, are of course, side effects.

Paul Is A Full-Out Nerdgasm!

Paul is an affectionate parody of all things geek – comics, skiffy [which is how you pronounce sci-fi if you’ve been reading it forever] and pop culture. Two British nerds/geeks have an alien encounter as they tour America’s UFO hot spots and weirdness – and hilarity – ensue.

Julia Goes Evil! Evil Queen/Stepmother, That Is!

Julia Roberts has closed a deal to play the evil queen in Relativity Media’s Snow White movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Jay A. Fernandez.

Tarsem Singh [The Cell, The Fall] is directing from a script by Melissa Wallack and Jason Keller. The edgier take on Snow White finds Snow and her seven dwarvish friends seeking to take vengeance on her evil stepmother for killing her father. Production is scheduled to begin in April, with a July 29, 2012 release date.

So, is this take on Snow White going to be Grimm, or grim? I wonder…
