It’s pretty amazing that out of all the casual games available for the PSN and XBLA there’s only one MiniGolf game (on XBLA) and that game is over two years old. I regularly check and am always disappointed not to find a decent MiniGolf game. The folks at Zen Studio the folks behind Zen Pin Ball have made my day they announced that Planet MiniGolf is coming exclusively to the PSN this Spring. I hate exclusive deals, but in this case I own all the gaming systems so ultimately it doesn’t affect me. The game features:
- A deep and engaging single player campaign taking players through fantastically designed courses with over 140 different holes
- Worldwide Tournament Play – Set up personal tournaments with a group of friends or go online up against gamers from around the world!
- Golf Course Editor – Build, manage and share golf courses…make them crazy, challenging and wacky and then upload to share them online!
- PlayStation Move Functionality – Planet MiniGolf will be fully compatible with PlayStation 3’s upcoming motion control system, “Move”
- Multi-national Game – Countries in the world are represented on the global leader boards!
Take a gander at some of these tasty screenshots.

Sony has finally announced the official name of their motion controller and no it’s not the Arc! It’s the PlayStation Move. I’ve made it clear in the past that I hate motion controllers, when I’m ready to sit down and play a game I don’t want to sweat, or flail my arms around like a moron. I want to push a button and see something happen. I do like that I can use it as a giant dildo.

The folks at Harmonix, the makers of Rock Band is going to put The Who‘s upcoming Superbowl Mashup on XBLA for 160 points ($1.99). The band recorded a special version of their upcoming half time show just for us Plastic Instrument players. Frankly it’s a pretty terrible release. It didn’t say if it’s coming to the PS3 or exactly when this song will be or exactly what the mashup is going to be – but you can pretty much guess it’ll be combination of “Pinball Wizard,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Eminence Front,” “Going Mobile,” “Leaving Here,” “Magic Bus,” “My Generation,” and “Real Good Looking Boy.” The main takeaway is, you’ll be able to play The Who’s Super Bowl performance. How cool is that?

It’s pretty amazing, Sony’s new multiplayer game MAG has been talked about for years, for some reason I feel like I saw a clip of this game as part of the PS3 “sizzle” reel 3 or 4 years ago. The game was supposed to be a showcase of how awesome the Sony PSN Network is because it’s the first multiplayer game that’s designed specifically to have 256 players battling it online in one big world. The problem is, the game doesn’t live up to its promise.

Who says January through March is a slow month in the gaming industry. After taking the month of December off, the industry has returned with a vengeance in January, we have 5 big games this month Bayonetta (which I hated – 15 minutes of cut and loading screens for 5 minutes of gameplay), Dark Void (which I hated) and Darksiders. Then next week we have M.A.G. and Mass Effect 2, this Gut Reaction is about a weird little gem called Darksiders. I’ve played about 8 hours of this game so far, but according to the game stats I’m only 2 1/2 hours in – how is this possible?
Many early reviews have said that this game is a Zelda done right for the next generation and yeah, I can see some similarities between the two games, but I don’t think it’s as blatant as everyone is making it out to be. I mean sure at some point in the game you get a horse (which I haven’t seen yet) and you do have to collect skulls to sell to some demon to get your weapon upgrades and you are running around castles instead of dungeons, but really by now aren’t these standard gameplay mechanics by now? I think reviewers who spend hundreds of words talking about how this game is like Zelda misses the point.

I hate it when companies have offsite events at conventions, it means leaving the convention center where all the real action is and takes up valuable floor walking time, but I like the folks at Sony so I made a special trip down to the brand new Las Vegas City Center where the PlayStation team held court to celebrate MAG going gold. They had a surprisingly decent turnout, but then the promise of several hours of fragging, free booze and food will get that for you. In attendance were the developers of Mag. 2009 really has been the year of the PS3, after only using it to play Blu-ray movies for 3 years I’m finally enjoying it as a Video Game platform and with MAG and other exclusives, 2010 promises to be another great year. I ran out of space yesterday and upgraded my HD with no issues.

Ok, call me an old fuddy duddy (what’s the female alternative to this – fritta diddy?) but I don’t get the whole Facebook and Twitter on my game console thing. They both officially hit X-Box Live yesterday, today Sony is following suit with their latest and greatest firmware release 3:10 which brings Facebook, Twitter, enhanced Friends List functionality and a new layout for photos. You can now share your trophies, psn purchases with all the world on FB and the Twit. Again, I don’t understand the point of this, has anyone tried to do something as type in a code on both these systems? An absolute nightmare, I couldn’t imagine typing full messages. Then again I suppose you can plug in a USB keyboard, but again that means you’ll be gaming and decide hey let’s twit about this. I don’t get the appeal, is this something people are dying to use? The full press release is after the break.
