The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards this morning and the big surprise was that Martin Scorsese’s Hugo lead the pack with eleven, while Michel Hazanavicius’ silent film The Artist received ten.

Under the Academy’s new rules – and sliding scale for Best Picture nominations – Hugo and The Artist were joined by seven other films, one less than the maximum allowable.

With all the differing selections in most of the main categories, the various critics groups have definitely made any speculation on the Oscars® a crap shoot.

The last major critics group, The National Society of Film Critics, has checked in with its choices for the best in film for 2011 and, surprise, they’ve chosen the deeply odd and beautiful end-of-the-world/study of clinical depression film, Melancholia – directed by Lars Von Trier – as best film of 2011.

Melancholia lead Kirsten Dunst was named Best Actress and Brad Pitt nabbed Best Actor for his work in Moneyball and The Tree of Life. The Tree of Life’s Terrence Malik was named Best Director.

Tangled

I had the opportunity to attend an advance screening of the 3D release of Beauty and the Beast this morning, not the least because the brilliant Disney classic is well served by its 3D conversion, but also because the wedding that was promised in Disney’s Tangled is the setting for the fabulously frantic farce of Tangled Ever After.

Despite the wedding of Rapunzel [Mandy Moore] and Flynn Rider [Zachary Levi], Tangled Ever After the short is actually a showcase for the smartest characters in the original movie – that would be Pascal the horse and Maximus the chameleon…

The 2012 Producers Guild nominees for movies include such previous award winners The Artist, The Help, and Hugo, while Terrence Malik’s The Tree of Life is curiously absent.

Among the usual suspects in television drama and comedy are: A Modern Family, 30 Rock, Mad Men and [surprisingly, given its critical freefall this season] Dexter.

A complete list of nominees follows the jump.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes Awards many not be the most respected awards in Hollywood, but they know how to throw a party – and they also know how to throw a spanner in the works when it comes to unusual [and sometimes superior] taste when it comes to selecting nominees.

On the movies side of things, multiple nominee/winner Tree of Life is not on this year’s shortlist for Best Movie, for example – though The Artist makes the list for BestComedy/Musical and Michael Hazanavicius did get a Best Director nom.

A wee bit more commentary and the full list of nominees follow the jump.
