The Doctor Who serial Power of the Daleks made television for one very simple reason: it marked the first time that a Doctor regenerated. In the opening moments, William Hartnell’s crusty grandfather-type gave way to Patrick Troughton’s cosmic hobo – and even his companions didn’t know what to make of him.
Troughton’s second Doctor was more than a bit sillier than the original, but not less intelligent and resourceful. This was a Doctor who talked to himself and played his recorder to help him think.
After a well-received screening on BBC America, Power of the Daleks is now available on home video (DVD only, it appears).
