GKIDS has acquired the North American rights to Modest Heroes: Ponoc Short Films Theatre, Volume 1 – an animated trilogy of stories from Studio Ponoc directors Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Yoshiyuki Momose and Akihiko Yamashita.
Theatrical release for the film – which follows Studio Ponoc’s When Marnie Was There – is January, 2019.
From Academy Award®-nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi – animator on Studio Ghibli masterpieces Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo, and director of When Marnie Was There and The Secret World of Arrietty – comes a dazzling new adventure about a young girl named Mary, who discovers a flower that grants magical powers, but only for one night.

GKIDS has acquired North American rights to the first release from Japanese Studio Ponoc – Mary and the Witch’s Flower, directed by Academy Award® nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty, When Marnie Was There).
Mary and the Witch’s Flower is based on Mary Stewart’s 1971 children’s book, “The Little Broomstick,” and features a script by Riko Sakaguchi. The story centers on an ordinary young girl named Mary, who discovers a flower that grants magical powers, but only for one night.
Mary and the Witch’s Flower will be released in theaters this winter.
