Comedy Central

If you only know Craig Ferguson as Drew’s boss on The Drew Carey show, or as the affable talk show host [the one who actually engages in conversation with his guests], then you may be in for a wee bit o’ shock when you play Comedy Central’s Craig Ferguson: A Wee Bit o’ Revolution [which was recorded on July 4, 2008].

Craig Ferguson

To begin with, the subject matter is all over the map [with a throughline on his becoming an America citizen earlier that day]. Ferguson can make a case for Sean Connery as the only James Bond [and dismiss the current lad in a wickedly concise and nasty manner] while noting that he always seems to be playing Sean Connery [Sean Connery as a Russian submarine commander in The Hunt For Red October, for example].

He is also quick to point out how born Americans take their situation, vis-à-vis various freedoms, for granted – and why that’s so wrong. His tale of how he decided to become and American citizen may even be funnier than his riff on Connery. He even steps over the line into Christopher Titus Land when he talks about his ex – though he comes at the situation from an entirely different perspective.

Whether he’s talking about rehab [a simultaneously hilarious and sobering bit] or addressing the topics listed above, Ferguson’s no-nonsense approach is completely winning. His delivery is assured and stage presence is solid – and the accent gives his material an unexpected texture. A Wee Bit o’ Revolution may be Ferguson’s first stand-up special, but it certainly won’t be his last.

Features: Interview With Craig Ferguson; Speech at Boston’s Historic Faneuil Hall, July 4, 2008.

“If you are in here tonight, never having contemplated suicide – you have never truly been in love,” states Christopher Titus as he opens his Comedy Central Valentine’s Day Special. “And if you are in here and have never contemplated murder,” he adds, “you have never been divorced!” Titus has become one of our premier comedians by turning his highly unorthodox life into comedy routines that leave “edgy” gasped in the dust. Love is Evol is no exception.

Love is Evol

Love is Evol deals with his divorce from his wife of fifteen years, that “demon slithering from the fiery depths of Satan’s anus – though for legal reasons, I have to call her Kate.” His detailing of the proceedings is without mercy – for both parties. It’s filled with sage wisdom on many subjects – including breast implants after five years, or more, of marriage. He also introduces a part of his character he calls his “inner retard” – which, when combined with his physical behavior, could be considered politically incorrect in the extreme. Then you listen to his inner retard’s musings and, as pessimistic as it is, it’s also at least as smart as Titus’ more “normal” self. At first you’ll laugh, then you’ll feel guilty, and then you’ll laugh some more.

The first half of Love is Evol deals with Titus’ divorce. The second half deals with his finding – miracle of miracles – his perfect woman and, even more miraculously, actually getting together with her in spite of his many and varied idiocies, which he describes in heart-stoppingly funny detail.

This DVD is not for the faint of heart, or the self-appointed arbiters of political correctness. Love is Evol could be injurious to their mental and physical health. For everyone else, it is quite possibly the funniest single comedy performance since his Norman Rockwell is Bleeding. And, as Titus would say, “No wussies!”

Features include: Titus vs. Cupid: Behind the Scenes at the Photo Shoot; The Fans Speak: Love on the Rocks, and Countdown to V-Day [Titus’ Valentine tips for guys].

There are stand up comics who make a career out of other people’s pain; comics who make careers out of their own pain, and comics who make a career out of the story of their lives. Christopher Titus does all three [though in fairness, the other people’s pain comes from the members of his family, and his friends...].

If you watched FOX’s three-season sitcom, Titus, you’ve probably encountered much of this material – watered down, at least in terms of language – before. Or, you might have heard some of it on one of his other CDs, or at one of his concerts. If you have, don’t think you can skip this new two-CD set.

Christopher Titus does something that no other comic does – he makes a childhood that should be tragic and turns it into humor. Whether he’s explaining why fathers are better parents than mothers; suggesting likely occupations for ex-junkies, or detailing the events of his childhood, Titus pulls no punches – in fact, on occasion, he leans into them.

With his machine gun-like vocal style, he launches into moments of heartbreaking poignancy just long enough to turn them into some of the funniest bits you’ll ever hear. Even the title of the album – Norman Rockwell is Bleeding – is a humorous reference to the utterly dysfunctional nature of his family. There are too few comics whose work is actually as important as it is funny. Titus is one of them. If you think your family is weird, you owe it to yourself [and, possibly, your family] to check out this CD. Just don’t be too surprised if some of it rings the odd bell or two…
