Starz Developing Neil Gaiman’s American Gods for TV!

Starz is developing one of the premiere fantasy novels of the 21st Century for television – Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. This is a song we’ve heard before, but going by Starz’s record to development leading to actual programming (as with, for example, Outlander), the chances that we will actually see Gaiman’s epic novel of war between the new gods and the old on our screens have just gone up a hundredfold.

Adding to the general increase in positivity, Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, wonderfalls) and Michael Green (The River, Kings, Heroes) will be American Gods’ showrunners and co-writers of the pilot script. The series comes from Fremantle North America (American Idol, A&E’s upcoming The Returned). For more details – including comments from Gaiman and Fuller – check out the press release after thee jump.

Pushing Daisies, which debut in the fall 2007 television line up, told the story of  Ned {Lee Pace), a young man with a very special gift. As a boy, Ned discovered that he could return the dead briefly back to life with just one touch. Now a pie maker, Ned puts his ability to good use, not only touching dead fruit and making it ripe with everlasting flavor, but working with Emerson Cod (Chi McBride) in a private investigating practice to crack murder cases by raising the dead and getting them to name their killers. Things get totally complicated when Ned brings his childhood sweetheart, Charlotte ‘Chuck’ Charles (Anna Friel), back from the dead — and keeps her alive. Life would be perfect for Ned and Chuck, except for one cruel twist: If he ever touches her again, she’ll go back to being dead, this time for good.

The first season pilot episode of Pushing Daisies, Pie-lette, scored high marks with television critics and viewers alike with it’s unique and quirky premise. The Emmy Award winning series quickly became a hit for creator Brad Fuller and Warner Brothers to the extent that it was renewed for a second season by the ABC network.
