SUPERNATURAL

Breaking News: The CW has announced today (2.16.10) that the hit series Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins has been given an early renewal for a a 6th season. However the good news for fans and viewers of the show has been tempered by information coming out that series creator Eric Kripke is stepping down from his duties as show-runner on a day-to-day basis in season 6. Those duties will be turned over to executive producer Sera Gamble. Gamble has been with Supernatural since season 1, coming on board first as a writer than taking on executive producer duties as the seasons progressed. Kripke along with Robert Singer will both continue on with the series in their roles of Executive Producers and will still have a hand in the direction of the series. Word also has it that Kripke will also be using his time to work on a new project for Warner Brothers.

“Cupid, draw back you bow and let your arrow go straight to my lover’s heart for me.”

That’s a line from a very popular Valentine’s Day themed love song, but in Supernatural S.14 My Bloody Valentine (written by Ben Edlund and directed by Mike Rohl), it seems to have a very sinister and deadly consequence. Or does it? That’s what Sam (Jared Padalecki –who is getting married in two weeks to the lovely Genevieve Cortese aka Ruby 2.0) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester are at first led to believe by the Angel Castiel (Misha Collins) who is convince a Cupid (Lex Medlin, whom I have to say is one confident man) has gone rogue and is killing the lovers it first unites. Castiel tells them that a cupid is actually a lower level cherub and not incontinent. Nor, as we find out are they “little dudes with wings and a diaper”. The one in is this episode is a full grown, robust looking man with the gentle playfulness of an over eager puppy. It becomes apparent to both Winchesters and to Castiel that the whimsical cupid is not the one setting lovers up for the kill and they also quickly discover that it isn’t just hungry hearts that are dying, other people with other hungers are falling victim as well.

SUPERNATURAL

Once upon a time, in mining town in Pennsylvania called Harmony, there was this handsome but totally deranged young man named Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles) who took on the personality of Harry Warden a dead miner who used to kill people with a pick axe. Hanniger unable to control his split personality, began taking up where Warden left off and..oh wait wrong My Bloody Valentine!

This one is  the newest episode of season five of the hit CW Network series, Supernatural. While this aptly titled 14th episode of Supernatural, which is being aired in February (and you gotta love this show’s sense of the absurd to connect these things together) might not be featured in the latest 3D technology, we still get to see Jensen Ackles..and Jared Padalecki too.

In Supernatural S5.14, My Bloody Valentine (directed by Mike Rohl and written by Ben Edlund), Castiel (Misha Collins) helps Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) hunt down Cupid (guest star Lex Medlin) on Valentine’s Day after townspeople start to kill each other for love. However, after Cupid tells them he’s innocent, they discover Famine (guest star James Otis), one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, has arrived in town.

Hmmm, wonder if he is as good looking as the deranged killer, Tom Hanniger? Let’s take a look at the sneak peeks provided by Warner Brother and see if we get to find that out.

After five seasons of being the WB/CW dark horse show with incredible staying power, Supernatural received some much deserved recognition for their work. In the 36th Anniversary of the People’s Choice Awards, Supernatural won the award in the category of Favorite Scifi/Fantasy Show, beating out Heroes, Tru Blood, Lost and Vampire Diaries to win Best Sci Fi/Fantasy Show!

“This show is on fire!” says the CW Network in a recent press release about the win. And indeed it is with the series climbing higher in the ratings since the beginning of season 4 than is normally expected of series that has been on the air and fighting it’s up way through the ratings like Supernatural has.

While the presenting of the award was not shown in the aired portion of the awards ceremony, which aired live on CBS on Wednesday January 6th, it is still a very important accomplishment for a series that has come so far by riding on the strength of it’s strong, well crafted characters of Sam and Dean Winchester and the recently added Castiel, (played respectively by talented lead actors, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins) along with such intriguing recurring characters as Bobby Singer(Jim Beaver), The Trickster (Richard Speight, Jr.) and Ellen Harvelle (Samantha Ferris).

SUPERNATURAL

Yes as you know by now, I like to take a quick look at what’s going on around the fandom before I start into the commentary on an episode. The first thing to take notice of is that The CW Network still has plenty of reasons to be doing the happy dance where season 5 of Supernatural is concerned. Here are some of the stats they have sent out following the airing of The End last Thursday.

SUPERNATURAL had another solid performance with “The End” episode—which does NOT represent “the end,” SUPERNATURAL fans—improving 17% over last week in adults 18-34 (14.4) and 7% in women 18-34 (1.6/4). SUPERNATURAL also performed well in both adults 18-49 (1.2/3) and women 18-49 (1.4.3).

And in the Live +7 stats that were released for the prior weeks episodes, we see that when these were compiled SUPERNATURAL had increase of 35% in women 18-34 (2.33rtg v. 3.83rtg), 47% increases in adults 18-34 (1.21rtg v. 1.78rtg) and total viewers increased 38% (2.9M v. 4M). That’s mighty impressive and I’m thinking that if this keeps up that 6th season is going to become a reality and hey I can handle one more season of having the Winchester brothers on my TV every Thursday night. And speaking of those handsome hunters of the supernatural, let’s move on to my commentary for The End.

SUPERNATURAL

Two Dean Winchesters and a Watchman connection — that’s what this Thursday night’s new episode of the hit CW series Supernatural promises viewers as episode 5.04 The End airs at 9PM EST.

In The End, which was written by Ben Edlund and directed by Steve Boyum, the viewers find that Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester are still estranged from each other even though Sam has called his brother up to tell Dean he wants to rejoin him in the battle of the Apocalypse. Dean puts the kibosh on that, telling Sam that they are better off apart. After talking to Sam, Dean is visited by Zachariah (guest star Kurt Fuller), who continues to pressure him to fulfill his destiny and become a vessel for the archangel Michael so that he can defeat Lucifer.

At the end of Supernatural season 2 and all of season 3, the gates of hell had been opened and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) had a deal coming due for his soul: the soul he had traded into hell in one year’s time for the return to life of his younger brother, Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki).  In the exciting season 4 of the hit CW/Warner Brother’s series, the gates of heaven have been opened as well and the Angel Castiel (Misha Collins) lifted Dean out of hell after he had suffered 4 long months of torture at the hands of the demons. But was it too late to keep Sam from going down a dark path with his guide, the demon Ruby (now played by Genevieve Cortese) who seemed like a friend but could easily be a foe.  And did hell change Dean Winchester more than Sam wants to admit? All this amid a desperate race to stop the demons from breaking 66 of the seals needed to hold Lucifer imprisoned. Can Sam and Dean Winchester pull back together as a team in time to do this?
