The Civil Wars are an up-and-coming indie-folk band that is quickly gaining national recognition. Just yesterday they announced that they’ll be joining Adele again this fall on her sold-out UK tour. They’re also one of VH1’s You Oughta Know bands and their song “Poison and Wine” was the final group dance on So You Think You Can Dance last week.
The Civil Wars are performing in New Orleans this Friday, July 8 at 10pm EST but you don’t have to be in the Big Easy to get a glimpse of this particular concert as it will be livestreamed on Liveset.com, a site that streams live concerts in beautifully-shot HD.
Liveset recently filmed them while they covered Elliot Smith’s classic “Between the Bars”: http://vimeo.com/25850462. It’s a beautiful short video that captures their magical musical style so well. I want to let people know that for the cost of a latte you can view this incredible new talent in a really cool new form of music streaming.

Ok, I don’t have any place to put this, so I’ll put it in our hurting Music section, it’s a fun clip from Weird Al Yankovic who I used to love when I was a kid. This will be my last post before I go cruising for a few days, so I thought I’d go with something cute and funny.
Recently I was wrapped up in a busy week, which is nothing new, but this week seemed particularly crazy to me. And as usual I spent part of my day hounding managers and publicists of killer bands I love to try and set up an interview to plug their latest project or just because I’m such a music geek that I really wanna meet the band.So when I got a last minute e-mail about interviewing one of my new favorite bands, Uh Huh Her, I jumped at the chance. The one real problem was getting Washington, D.C. to Philadelphia on time. The final details came in so last minute I had just enough time to make it to Union Station and board the train. In fact the train was boarding as I ran to print my ticket from the kiosk. Thankfully, I made to Philly in time, although half an hour late, to interview the lovely and talented girls of Uh Huh Her Camila Grey and Leisha Hailey and see their show later that night.
Common Reaction, their debut album, is available right now so run to that favorite place where you buy music and get this CD. It’s one of the best pieces of music I’ve picked up all year. For more info about the band first read the interview below then check them out at their site www.uhhuhher.com or on MySpace at www.myspace.com/uhhuhhermusic.
Jennifer Hudson is an Oscar winning actress with the voice of a true diva. This American Idol cast-off’s career has taken off over the past few years to great heights. In her latest venture, Hudson co-stars in the upcoming film “The Secret Life of Bees” where she plays the part of Rosaleen, a young black woman living on a peach farm in the south during the volatile sixties hired to care for Lily Owens; a young white girl with an abusive father whose mother died tragically when she was a child. Rosaleen is Lily’s surrogate mother and dearest friend and when the two take the monumental yet dangerous step of trying to register Rosaleen to vote, they find themselves in a world of trouble and are forced to go on the run.
I sat down with Jennifer to chat about her role as Rosaleen and how it has impacted her life today as a young, successful African American woman; where she keeps her Oscar and I even got a peek at her gorgeous engagement ring…its ginormous!
