BBC AMERICA’S AWARD-WINNING MINISERIES LUTHER IS BACK WITH A FOUR-NIGHT PREMIERE EVENT

Reprising his Golden Globe-winning role, Idris Elba electrifies in a triumphant return to television

New York – July 30, 2013 – BBC AMERICA’s critically acclaimed co-production, Luther, makes its much anticipated return with an explosive four-night television event. Starring Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Thor) as John Luther in the title role which won him a Golden Globe® Best Actor award, the miniseries’ third installment finds the near-genius detective struggling to cope with his own demons. He’s back under intense pressure with two conflicting crimes to investigate and a ruthless ex-cop determined to bring him down. But love also crosses the detective’s path in this new chapter when he meets Mary Day (Sienna Guillory – Resident Evil, Love Actually). While Luther is offered a chance at happiness, he must also face some of the darkest crimes of his career. Luther returns September 3-6, 10:00pm ET/PT.

Passionate, committed and just on the right side of ruthless, John Luther is back stalking the streets of London searching for the evil that lurks in the city. The new four-part miniseries opens with a crime that centers on a twisted fetishist targeting young women in the capital. The killer has struck once already and Luther is convinced he’s going to kill again. But with London’s best detective ordered to investigate another case (the murder of an internet tormentor) the chances of catching the lethal fetishist before he strikes again are shrinking. Luther’s life is made doubly complicated when it emerges that his worst enemies are his own colleagues, and they’re willing to break every rule in the book to bring him down…including targeting his right-hand man, Detective Sergeant Ripley. Cracks splinter the foundations of Luther and Ripley’s alliance. Will Ripley turn a blind eye to Luther’s antics or will he go on record? Then, after years of grief, a chance encounter means that this lonely detective might just be on the verge of finding love. But the return of Alice Morgan could change Luther’s path completely. Although they’ve stood on opposite sides of the law – the two have always shared an undeniable connection, and a powerful one at that. Now, Alice is back for the detective she can’t seem to let go of. Will Mary Day be able to accept Luther’s past, can Luther leave it behind, and will Alice let him?

Idris Elba on the miniseries’ third installment: “He’s gone through a lot of trauma. Each time you go through anything bad in your life, it makes you a bit more reflective, and it definitely scars you in some way – in this series he’s looking for peace. But a lot happens in this season…I don’t know where it’s going to leave Luther. He’s not a fragile man, but he might end up becoming fragile after what he goes through. This series is very much about Luther trying to change his life and get to the finish line.”

Crackling with energy and packed with tension from the very start, Luther’s third installment sees the detective pushed to his limits as pressure increases from all sides. He is forced to confront his own sense of morality. Can Luther walk the line between right and wrong and do his job or has he finally met his match? The four-part BBC and BBC AMERICA co-production is created by Neil Cross and executive produced by Phillippa Giles.

SYNOPSES:

PART ONE – TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 10:00PM ET/PT

Luther returns to investigate a twisted fetishist who is murdering women in a horrific echo of an unsolved case from the 1980s.  The team must put all their resources into finding the copycat killer whose murderous spree has only just begun.  Luther’s focus is divided when a reluctant Detective Superintendent Schenk assigns him to another case – a malicious internet tormentor has been found murdered in his home. Pulled in every direction, Luther’s patience is wearing thin. As he rushes to the second crime scene a car crash is the last thing he needs – or so he thinks, until he sets eyes on the beautiful Mary Day.  But nothing ever comes easily for John Luther – other forces are at work against him in the shape of Detective Chief Inspector Erin Gray and her boss, Detective Superintendent Stark.  Stark and Gray will stop at nothing to punish those who work outside the perimeters of the law.

PART TWO – WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 10:00PM ET/PT

Luther’s date with Mary and the promise of romance is interrupted by the news of another murder. The killer has struck again – the number of victims is escalating and fast. Faced with the repercussions of their public disagreement, Luther orders Ripley to investigate the murder of the internet tormentor (Jared Cass) on his own.  Meanwhile, he throws himself into a mountain of cold case files, determined to connect the past and present in order to predict the fetishist’s next move. Can he win this battle of wits in time to prevent the next horror?  Ripley must choose whether to turn a blind eye to Luther’s unorthodox policing or go on record, while Stark’s obsession with Luther deepens and DCI Gray finds that the line between right and wrong is becoming increasingly blurred.

PART THREE – THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 10:00PM ET/PT

Two young men in hoodies are shot at close range in what looks like a gangland crime. But when another man dies shortly after, Luther realizes that what the three dead men have in common is a criminal record. It looks like a new killer is on the loose – a vigilante with a personal vendetta against all past offenders.

PART FOUR – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 10:00PM ET/PT

The vigilante makes his vendetta personal – targeting Luther and those closest to him, raining destruction on everything he touches. Stark and Gray arrive just in time to hurry Mary to a secret place, but is her safety really Stark’s priority or is she just a pawn in his game to lure Luther to him?
