Emojis are taking over the world, figuratively speaking. Everywhere you look, people are communicating more and more through those little emotional icons on their smartphones/computers.

It was only a matter of time before they played a key role on an episode of Doctor Who – and this is the week!

The second episode of Season Ten finds The Doctor and Pearl in a beautiful on a distant planet – with cute little robots that communicate solely by emoji. It is not a utopia.

Doctor Who runs on BBC America on Saturdays (9/8C), followed by its surprisingly much darker young adult spinoff, Class.

EMOJI MONSTERS INVADE DOCTOR WHO

ALL-NEW EPISODE SATURDAY ON BBC AMERICA

It’s the era of the emoji! And as we’ve all come to know from one text or another, an emoji is not always what it seems. It’s difficult to read between the lines when symbols replace words…and when it comes to the Whoniverse, the consequences can be deadly. This Saturday’s all-new episode of Doctor Who (titled ‘Smile’) sees the iconic series tap into the pop-culture zeitgeist when the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and his fearless companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) encounter the seemingly cute Emoji-Robots.

Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, teases that the episode includes “a fantastic alien city – among the best we’ve ever had,” “marvelous new monsters,” and that the protagonists will be “surrounded by jeopardy and menace every second…” ‘Smile’ premieres Saturday, April 22 at 9/8c, followed by Class at 10:05/9:05c.
