Muppets

Ok, I’ve spent this entire week being so very, very pissed off at the folks that run CinemaCon that I was going to completely ignore the few presentations that I actually did get into. But I figured, I’m here and hey I can write this horrible experience off my taxes next year so I might as well talk about Disney’s CinemaCon Presentation – even though I was hassled by some asshole security guard.

The big news to come out of the event was Disney gave us more details on Monsters, Inc 2. The sequel is going to be called Monsters University and will be a prequel to the hit film. The movie will show us how Sulley and Mike first met at Monsters University. Of course they hate each other on sight. We’ll see how they overcome their hatred and go onto become the best friends that we know and love.  Larry The Cable Guy (I’m sorry, I just don’t understand why he’s popular) came out to introduce Cars 2. We got a chance to watch a good 26 minutes of the movie and see almost all of the new characters in action. After the Cars 2 footage, Rob Marshall and Jerry B. (who loved me at last year’s WonderCon) came out to set up the 15 minute clip of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

CinemaCon 2011 Day 1

I’m in Las Vegas this week attending The Official Convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), also known as CinemaCon. This is a week when Hollywood comes together with Theater owners to pat each other on the back and say “Job well done…” We also get a glance at what new technology and concepts will be making it to our local Cinemas in the next year. The exhibit floor opens today. Last night Paramount Pictures brought the stars out for a two-hour presentation of new footage from some of the hot upcoming releases. Due to embargo rules I can’t talk about much of what I saw. The two “watch” phrases of the night were “it’s a rough cut,” and “thank you Celine for letting us use the house that you built for the week…”

Supernatural made its first appearance at the Paley Festival during its first season and it was wonderful to see the cast and members of the creative team return once again.  The first part of my report outlined the introductions and offered a detailed narrative on the preview clip for the upcoming western-themed episode.  When the Q&A portion began, the first question dealt with the process involved in making episode 6×15, The French Mistake, wherein demon-hunting brothers Sam and Dean were angelically transported to an alternate universe where they found themselves to be actors named Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles working on a television show titled Supernatural.  This very-meta episode, loaded with in-jokes, not only scratched at the fourth wall but brought it crumbling down — just as surely as I suspect the wall in Sam’s psyche holding back the tortuous memories of hell will come crashing down as we approach the season finale.  And while news about a seventh season has not officially been announced, all indications are strong that fans will need to worry only until September about being left with a gut-wrenching cliffhanger.

We pick up the transcript as Eric Kripke started describing the difficulties encountered in working through some of the legalities associated with The French Mistake.  In case you missed it, Part I can be found HERE.

But just a quick note: if you enjoy reading about these events, please visit the website for the Paley Center For Media and do not hesitate to support them through a number of wonderful items they have available for purchase, including full DVDs of past panels of many different shows.  You can also become a supporting member so that these types of events can continue to be offered.  http://www.paleycenter.org/

I had the honor and pleasure of attending the Supernatural panel at the twenty-eighth annual William S. Paley Television Festival in Beverly Hills, which has been in full swing since March 4 and will continue until March 17.  The shows featured at this year’s festival are “The Walking Dead”, “True Blood”, “White Collar”, Parks and Recreation”, “Freaks and Geeks”, “Undeclared”, Eastbound & Down”, “An Evening with Jimmy Fallon”, “Community”, American Idol”, “Hot in Cleveland”, “Glee”, “Raising Hope”, and of course “Supernatural.” Thanks to some copious notetaking, I hope to present you with a (mostly) accurate transcript of this wonderful panel.  Be forewarned that there WILL be some spoilers covering the rest of the season.

The Paley Center for Media believes that everything presented on radio and television has value.  And as such, the Center has an extensive archive of all things radio and television from as far back to the past, through to the present.  It was very appropriate, not only to the Paley Center but also to Supernatural, that they would pull an old commercial dating back from the late 1950s urging us to “See the USA, in your Chevrolet!” in order to open the afternoon festivities.

This first report will cover the introductory elements, as well as a detailed description of the preview of the much-anticipated western-themed episode.

Dell Streak 7 on T-Mobile

4G and LTE devices and network expansion announcements are all the rage at CES this week. T-Mobile is not one to be left out of the fray. Today T-Mobile unveiled plans to double the speed of its 4G network this year, which will be capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps. Moreover, the company announced that in 2011 it will launch at least 25 new 4G devices, starting with its first 4G tablet — the Dell™ Streak 7, expected to be available at T-Mobile stores across the country in the coming weeks. The company vowed to aggressively expand and evolve its 4G smartphone portfolio, launching additional devices capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps in the first half of 2011, and smartphones capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps in the second half of the year.

A whole slew of new sexy Android Phones are coming out in the next few months. HTC has just hit us their latest crop all featuring 4G speeds and there’s a phone for every carrier; the HTC EVO Shift 4G from Sprint, HTC Inspire 4G from AT&T, and HTC ThunderBolt from Verizon Wireless. Look at this we even have pricing and release dates? In a CES Press Release – egads, unheard of! The HTC EVO Shift 4G will be $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and activation on a new two-year contract and data plan. It will be available in all Sprint retail channels, including www.sprint.com and 1-800-Sprint1, on Jan. 9th.  While Verizon and AT&T haven’t announced pricing on their headsets, one would think it wouldn’t be radically different than Sprint.
