For some reason, the Highlander franchise has survived all manner of obstacles. The last two movies were – to say the least – atrocious. The anime´ was very average. One of the key figures in successfully transferring the movie concept to television, William S. Panzer, died. You’d think that would be enough. But, no! The Most Dangerous Night of Television is taking this Saturday off. Instead, we are getting Highlander: The Source [Sci Fi Channe, Saturday, 9/8C] – a movie that could’ve inspired Shakespeare’s phrase, “full of sound and fury – signifying nothing.”
The first Michael Shanks vehicle to air since Stargate SG-1 ended its run is a whacked out little Sci Fi Channel B-movie called Mega Snake [Sci Fi, Saturday, 9/8C] – and what could be more perfect for a B-movie than a giant snake? How about a blink or you’ll miss it appearance by Matthew Atherton as his Who Wants To Be A Superhero-winning character Feedback? Certainly, Mega Snake is all that and a bag of… well… something other than chips…
Let’s look at some cool new stuff on DVD shelves this week: Serenity Collector’s Edition – we already know that the Browncoats will buy this one, but if you were waiting for a jam-packed DVD set, this would be the one to get; it’s hard to believe it’s been twenty-five years since The Dark Crystal was released, but here’s its 25th Anniversary Edition, with a hologram cover and several new features; disturbia is a slacker take on Rear Window that successfully weds teen romance and psycho-killer genres, and Bubba Ho-Tep Limited Edition gives the oddball indie flick some glitzy new packaging…

The thing that stands out after screening the first three episodes of Flash Gordon [Sci Fi 9/8C] is that the show’s creative team seems to have to discarded everything about the popular comic strip except for the names of the characters and places. That strategy worked to telling effect on Battlestar Galactica and looks to have a lot of potential on NBC’s re-imagining of Bionic Woman. With Flash Gordon, it seems that it might not be the best of all possible space operas… Continue reading Flash Gordon: Swashbuckling Minus The Swash… and the Buckles…
