Blu-ray Review: Tron Legacy is the Ultimate Blu-ray Release

Tron: Legacy Blu-ray Review

Disney has been phoning it in lately on some of their recent Blu-ray releases. They have pulled out all the stops for Tron: Legacy. This five disc set includes the 3D, regular Blu-ray, Digital Copy and DVD versions of Tron: Legacy, if that’s not enough they go the extra mile and give us the Blu-ray version of Tron The Original Classic. Let’s give Disney mad props for giving us the complete Tron Experience right out of the gate without the double dip trip.

Movie

I loved Tron: Legacy, it was one of my top 10 films of 2010 and it holds up well on Blu-ray, even better because I didn’t have to watch it in 3D – that is until I get a 3D TV in a few weeks. The youngification of Jeff Bridges is just downright creepy. You can check out my full review of Tron: Legacy here – http://eclipsemagazine.com/comic-books/23627/

Audio/Video

This set is filled to the brim with extra features, but it starts with an abosutely stunning audio/video transfer of both the original Tron and Tron: Legacy.  Obviously Tron: Legacy looks better than Tron The Original. There is some noticeable grain on the picture in the original, but it’s not that bad and overall the is the best transfer of the film that I’ve ever seen. The ground breaking effects still look amazing after all these years. The audio does Daft Punk’s amazing Tron: Legacy soundtrack justice.

Extras

You get Tron: Legacy on every format and they throw in Tron: The Original Classic on Blu-ray, what more do you people want? Some features? This set has you covered – starting with a short video called Flynn Lives that takes place the day after Flynn first disappears into the grid and provides some background how Encom handled Flynn’s disappearance. Disney has a new iPad App called “Second Screen” which let’s you watch the movie in a whole new way. You can view different angles of scenes on your iPad, watch extra features, it’s like various Picture in Picture modes only it’s on your iPad and you have much more control over everything. Cool as hell.  The disc also includes a 2 minute trailer for the upcoming Animated Series Tron: Uprising, music Videos, and more.

Presentation/Navigation

Packaging is pretty boring and standard. I’m not a fan of the disc holders, but at least it doesn’t include clamps that make it difficult to get the disc in and out of the case. I love the menu navigation, it’s very simple and straight forward. The text is big and easy to read.

Comments

This is an example of why the Blu-ray format is so great and why Disney gets the format. It includes everything you would want from a movie with no compromises and I don’t feel like there’s going to be a “super duper” release in a few months (which is something Fox and Warner Brothers are notorious for). Disney treats the fans of their properties better than most and this 5 disc set is an example of that. The only thing missing is a good commentary track. All of this goodness is going to set you back $50 clams (on Amazon) but it’s well worth it if you are a Tron Fan.
