The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes Awards many not be the most respected awards in Hollywood, but they know how to throw a party – and they also know how to throw a spanner in the works when it comes to unusual [and sometimes superior] taste when it comes to selecting nominees.
On the movies side of things, multiple nominee/winner Tree of Life is not on this year’s shortlist for Best Movie, for example – though The Artist makes the list for BestComedy/Musical and Michael Hazanavicius did get a Best Director nom.

On the TV side, The HFPA included multiple shows snubbed elsewhere: Boss Homeland, Enlightened, Episodes; as well as actors in those shows: Damian Lewis [Homeland], Kelsey Grammer [Boss], Jeremy Irons [The Borgias], Claire Danes [Homeland], Madeline Stowe [Revenge…
Then there are the usual ‘What were they thinking’ noms – Glee for Best TV Comedy/Musical [really?], Callie Thorne [Necessary Roughness] for Best Actress in a TV DramaTV; My Week With Marilyn for Best Movie Comedy/Musical, Cars 2 for Best Animated Film [ahead of Winnie the Pooh, or even Kung Fu Panda 2?].
Between taking chances and playing nice with studios, The Golden Globes Awards frequently display Dissociative Identity Disorder – but they throw a great party and they’ve brought Ricky Gervais back for the third consecutive year, so they get full marks for that.
