Halloween kicks off with Zombie Apocalypse, as part of SyFy’s launch of a new slate of holiday-themed Saturday Original movies. Zombie Apocalypse, stars GoldenGlobe winner Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Mission Impossible, Dawn of the Dead), and will premiere tonight, Saturday, October 29 at 9PM (ET/PT).

Said Thomas Vitale, Executive Vice President, Programming and Original Movies: “Syfy is committed to finding new and different ways to destroy the world in our Saturday Original Movies. Since 2002, we’ve unleashed natural disasters, unnatural disasters, creatures on land, sea and air, and iconic fantasy characters. Now we’re taking over the holiday seasons, one terrifying movie at a time.”

In the Halloween-themed Zombie Apocalypse, a zombie plague has wiped out 90 percent of the world’s population. A small group of survivors, led by Rhames, fight their way across the United States to a rumored refuge on the island of Catalina. The movie also features Taryn Manning (Hawaii Five-O, Sons of Anarchy).  SyFy plans other holiday themed movies for Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day.

PREVIEW of Grimm on NBC

in Television,TV Reviews

The good news is that supernatural-themed sci-fi dramas have been making a comeback on broadcast TV, which is terrific for those of us who want to avoid the constant onslaught of reality series and even more standard cop dramas.  The bad news is that NBC decided to make a bonehead move and schedule their new series GRIMM opposite two other already established shows within the same genre, CW’s  “Supernatural”  and FOX’s  “Fringe.”   Considering that the pool of viewers usually drawn to such shows is already rather small and currently fractured between  Supernatural  and  Fringe,  adding a third player into this mix makes no sense at all. Rather than trying to fracture the small pool even further, it would have made more sense to capture a greater sample of this genre’s available viewers by scheduling opposite, well, anything else the rest of the week that isn’t sci-fi!

The premise of GRIMM puts a new twist on the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm by having a homicide detective learn that he is a descendant of a group of hunters known as “grimms” whose job is to keep humanity safe from the supernatural creatures of the world living among us.  The addition of the supernatural element certainly puts a twist on the typical cop procedural show.  The real Brothers Grimm created their fairytales in the early 1800s.  While we are certainly familiar with the cleaned up versions of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Princess and the Frog, Hansel and Gretel, and Rapunzel (to name a few), many of these original tales had dark, gruesome and macabre elements.  It is this scary element that GRIMM will be trying to capture.

Kara DioGuardi has been ruling the Billboard charts for years as the woman behind the music. NBC has picked up the new comedies Up All Night and Whitney for the remainder of the 2011-12 season, while the cancellation axe fell upon “The Playboy Club”.  Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment made the pick-up announcement today stating, “We made comedy an important goal for us this season and I’m very pleased to be making full-season commitments to both  ‘Whitney’  and  ‘Up All Night’.   We’re thrilled with the creative direction of both shows as well as the potential for them to continue to build loyal audiences over the coming months. We’re proud of all of the producers, writers, actors, and directors who have worked so hard to bring these shows to life.”

Up All Night,” created by Emmy Award nominee Emily Spivey (NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” and “Saturday Night Live”) and executive-produced by multi-Emmy winner Lorne Michaels (NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock”), is an irreverent look at modern parenthood.  Christina Applegate stars as Reagan Brinkley: loving wife, successful career woman, life of the party and, most recently, mom. Determined not to compromise her career or cool reputation to the clichés of motherhood, Reagan adjusts to life with a baby and returns to work with the support of her stay-at-home husband, Chris (played by Will Arnett).

NBC’s new multi-camera comedy “Whitney” is a hilarious look at modern-day love, which centers around Whitney (Whitney Cummings, “Chelsea Lately”) and Alex (Chris D’Elia, “Glory Daze”), a happily unmarried couple. Together for three years, the duo is in no rush to get hitched, which seems to get a mixed response from their friends.  At the end of the day, Whitney and Alex try to have a relationship on their own terms – in a world that expects a more traditional approach.

ADDENDUM:  My apologies.  Rather than stating it as a fact that “The Playboy Club” has been canceled, the phrasing should have been that “the cancellation axe appears ready to fall on The Playboy Club”.  As of today, there has not been any definite decision.

Did you know that today, September 29, is NATIONAL COFFEE DAY?  Don’t worry, I didn’t either, despite my severe addiction to this glorious brown liquid.  Whether it is the caffeine I can’t do without or the fantastic taste of a dark-brewed blend containing outrageous amounts of sugar and milk, the truth is this brown liquid keeps me company every morning.  Now, I do not usually take time to discuss documentaries when we have a bright, new TV season to play with, but when I saw that CNBC will be providing an inside look to my greatest addiction, I had to take a look.

Coffee has been called The Social Drink and it is the jolt that gets us through the day, and the one we can’t seem to live without. Once just our morning fix, it has become an American cultural obsession in a nation that consumes 400 million cups of it—every day!  It is also an $70 Billion global market.  On National Coffee Day, CNBC presents a special one-hour documentary titled “The Coffee Addiction,” on Thursday, September 29th at 9PM ET/PT.  This report allows us to see the journey of the coffee bean from the jungles of Peru as it makes its journey to ultimately end in our cup.  We will get an interesting look at the major players (like Starbucks), the way this commodity is traded, and even peek into the health effects. It will be hard to look at my morning coffee in quite the same after this. And don’t worry about that 9pm time interfering with your other programs; if you check the listings, you will see multiple airings of this program.  Details on it follow.
