After a five-year gestation period, Kevin Spacey believes that he is finally ready to bring the life of music legend Bobby Darin to the screen in the biopic Beyond the Sea, which he will star in and direct. Spacey will also produce, through his Trigger Street banner, along with Bernie Morris, Mark Damon and Sammy Lee. Shooting is scheduled to begin in June.
As a boy, singer Bobby Darin was told that due to a severe heart condition he would not live past his teen years. Anxious to prove himself a star, Darin made himself a legend in the music industry by the time he was 25 with songs such as “Dream Lover,” “Splish Splash” and the title song, “Beyond the Sea.” Darin also managed to find some success in nightclubs and films but, at age 37, died from complications during heart surgery.
The film will cover Darin’s life from the 1940s through the 1970s. Soundtrack details are still be worked out, as are rights to issues involving Darin’s original recordings.
Damon’s MDP Worldwide will be financing the film and producing along with Trigger Street. Stewart Hall and Joanne Horowitz will be executive producing. Beyond had been set up as a Warner Bros. project, but Spacey purchased the rights from the studio two years ago. MGM is now negotiating North American rights to the project, but no deal has yet been made.
After showing off vocal cords singing Darin tunes on the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil album, Spacey has been working with Darin’s conductor, Roger Kellaway, on fine tuning his voice. Repped by the William Morris Agency, Spacey recently signed on to become the artistic director of the Old Vic in London. The two-time Oscar winner will next be seen in The Life of David Gale, debuting this weekend.
